Family reunification
Bringing your spouse, children or parents to join you, with the evidence of family ties and means the application requires, and preparation that respects each family.

02What it is
A family sharing the same home
Family reunification is the legal route for relatives of a person living in Portugal to join them. Who can join and under which conditions depends on the law and the applicant's situation.
Every family is different: some already have a residence permit and want their spouse to join them, some want to reunite with young children, and others are thinking of their parents. The first step is to establish who is coming, through which route and with what evidence.
03Who can come
Family members covered, in general terms
The exact legal position depends on each case. During the assessment we confirm who can be included in the application.

Spouse
Evidence of marriage or partnership, and of continued life together, is usually the starting point.

Children
The children's age, custody and dependency affect the application and the documents needed.

Parents
Where there is dependency on the person living in Portugal, the application must demonstrate that relationship and the means available.

07Frequently asked questions
Questions about family reunification
General answers. Your case may have particularities that only an assessment with the lawyer can clarify.
01Can my family join me after I move?
That is the purpose of family reunification. We assess who can come, what evidence of family ties and means is required, and prepare the application.
02Can adult children be included?
It depends on the individual situation, including dependency and the applicable law. We assess this case by case.
03Do I need accommodation before applying?
Evidence of accommodation is usually part of the application. What is accepted depends on the case, and we confirm this during preparation.
04Is the application made in Portugal or the country of origin?
It depends on the legal basis of the application and each relative's situation. We explain the route in the initial assessment.
